This Print on canvas is of the artist, Belkis Ayón (1967 -1999). Belkis Ayón was an Afro-Cuban artist who's work ethic and ingenuity with the chollogragh (print making technique) gave her significant notirioty in the Cuban art world. She used her skills to give a visual interpretation of the story of Sikan - (a spiritual story of the the African rooted Abakuá Society) This society was under scrutiny due to it's un- orthodox beliefs. While achieving great heights in her career, Belkis decided to take her own life leaving those who knew her behind in question.
Her work and story inspired me to GET UP and get going again in my own life and journey. The potrait is done in the style of Byzantine.
